It affects some more than others, but emotion eating occurs in many people. For example, it occurs during sad moments, but also during moments of intense euphoria. What causes this phenomenon and how can you control it?
Health expert Bart explains it to you.
Hormones
There are these types of hormones that bother you: cortisol, dopamine and seretonin.- Cortisol: this hormone is released when you experience stress. This hormone also makes you crave extra sugar, extra salt and extra fatty foods.
- Dopamine: this neurotransmitter is associated with reward. The moment something positive is about to happen, this hormone plays up and you want to reward yourself with extra delicious food. Then when we eat it, we actually just want more and more of it, to experience that shot of dopamine over and over again.
- Seretonin: If you have too little of this, you can develop depression. This hormone and neurotransmitter is not in food, but "tryptophan" is, an amino acid you need to produce seretonin. Tryptophan is found in cheese, some carbohydrates and chocolate.
