Are frozen vegetables and fruits as healthy as the fresh variety? It can be so convenient to fill up your freezer, but then you want to make sure you're going for a healthy option.

Health expert Bart explains.

Just as healthy

To answer this pressing question right away: research shows that frozen fruits and vegetables are just as healthy as fresh produce off the shelf. In fact, some frozen products are themselves healthier than the fresh option.

Research

The study analyzed the nutritional value of broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, peas, spinach, blueberries and strawberries. Each product was put into three different conditions before the actual test took place. They were tested fresh, refrigerated and frozen.

Nutritional values

In most cases, both fresh, chilled and frozen fruits and vegetables were similar in the nutritional values they had. But in some cases, the researchers found that frozen fruits sometimes had a higher nutritional value than the refrigerated or fresher variety. Especially when it came to vitamin A.

Perfect ripeness

The reason is probably the following: frozen fruits and vegetables are frozen immediately after harvesting. In other words, at the moment they are perfectly ripe. Whereas fresh fruits and vegetables are first packaged, then transported to the supermarket and only then bought and eaten. This article was written by Bart (37).
