You've probably wondered this while downing a glass of water (or wine) while eating: is this a good or a bad idea? Does it disrupt your digestion or does it actually help it? Bart figured it out for you.
In any case, it has something to do with digestion.
Chewing and digestion
If you drink (a lot) while eating, you chew less. And if you chew less, you also produce less saliva, which is important for digesting your food. Still, this doesn't kill you. The digestive enzyme you need can also be added later in digestion. But something else happens when you chew little; you eat more.
Stomach Acid
Water is harmless, but if you drink alcohol while eating, you can get stomach trouble. Because alcohol lowers the pressure in your esophageal muscle, it opens more easily. The result is heartburn. Do you like to drink wine with dinner? If so, you may suffer from belching.
Drink more, eat less
So all in all, drinking with food is not bad, except that it can cause some heartburn. However, if you want to lose weight, it is better not to drink alcohol and drink a few glasses of water before eating. Then you'll end up eating less. This article was written by Bart (37).
