Making festive ice cubes

Not drinking alcohol is boring? Then you've never had a drink from Fleur's range. During dinners she makes a party of (non-alcoholic) drinks by adding extra special ice cubes.

Of course you can buy special shapes to make ice cubes, but Fleur takes a more creative approach.

Art

I once found the idea for these ice cubes on Pinterest and have since turned it into a true art form. I make them well in advance, especially if there is a dinner party on the agenda.

Fruit, herbs and flowers

It's really quite simple: you incorporate an additional ingredient (besides water, that is) into the ice cube. I usually choose fresh herbs that match the drink in question, such as mint leaves or pieces of ginger. But I also often incorporate plenty of brightly colored fruits like raspberries and blueberries into the cubes. You make it exactly as crazy as you want, you can even incorporate edible flowers or flower petals.

How to do it

Got excited? Then follow these instructions to make your own festive ice cubes.

  1. Make sure you have a (clean) ice cube tray.
  2. Place the herbs, fruits or flowers in the various compartments (and resist the temptation to cram each compartment completely full).
  3. Boil the amount of water you need, preferably several times in a row. This way you will make sure you have clear ice cubes later.
  4. Let the water cool to room temperature and fill the compartments with water.
  5. Put in the freezer. Depending on the setting of your refrigerator, it may take about 10-30 minutes for them to freeze completely.
  6. Serve in a decanter with water or separately in pretty glasses. Cheers!

Tip: opting for apple in your ice cubes? Then drizzle the apple pieces with lemon juice before incorporating them into the ice cubes. This helps against discoloration.
