What you feel like or need after dinner is hugely personal. Hanging out on the couch, exercising, going out.... It's all possible, but is it wise so soon after dinner? Emma found out for you.

1 Sport

To start right away with the most active point: no, it is not wise to start hanging out in the rings right after dinner. To digest your food, your stomach needs oxygenated blood. But when you exercise, all that blood and oxygen goes toward your muscles. Result: digestion that puts things on hold for a while and slows down. Not to mention the nausea or diarrhea that can occur. Besides, it doesn't feel very good either: hopping after having just eaten a borscht of pasta. Rather wait a few hours until you start exercising or even better, turn things around: exercise first, then eat.

2 Drink water

A few sips between meals or right after is no problem. But if you chug glasses full of water after dinner, you dilute the digestive steps in your stomach and slow down the digestive system. And that's exactly what you don't want, especially if you're trying to lose weight. By the way, drinking ice-cold drinks is not recommended either, they produce the same effect as drinking too much water after eating. Rather pour yourself a cup of tea.

3 Eat fruit

No, there is absolutely no need to give up fruit. But wait with eating it if you have just finished a meal. Fruit digests super fast compared to other products. If you eat an apple immediately after dinner, this apple will remain in your stomach on top of your dinner and can ferment. Result: bloating. So it's fine to eat a piece of fruit, but wait an hour or two before snacking.

4 In the bath or shower

I hear you thinking: what has this got to do with this? Let me explain it to you. When you take a bath or shower your body temperature rises and blood rises to the surface of your skin. This is inconvenient so soon after eating, because it is your digestive system that needs blood.So again, wait an hour or so after dinner before getting into the shower or bath.

5 Falling asleep

Even though it's so tempting: wait an hour or so after dinner before taking a nap or falling asleep for the night. This is because your body absorbs the nutrients from your food better when you sit up. Lying down can cause heartburn and bloating. So unless you sleep sitting up - wait a while before falling asleep after eating. Exercising during the day will help you get better sleep at night. Not the sporty type?
