The patio season has begun again! Now you can enjoy snacks and drinks in the sun again. And yes, you can do this even if you are following NewFysic. But how? We provide some handy tips for making healthy choices on the terrace.
Tip 1: Preparation
Check for yourself whether you would like to eat something on the terrace or not. Would you rather not? Then make sure you have eaten a good (NewFysic -proof) meal before you leave. That way you won't have any cravings and it will be easier to leave out all the tasty things.
Tip 2: Choose healthy drinks
Everyone knows the tip to take water or sparkling water. Extra tasty with a slice of lemon. Do you still feel like something sweet? Then choose light or zero soft drinks. That way you have the sweet taste, but not the sugars. Coffee and fresh mint tea or ginger tea (without sugar) are of course also good options.
Tip 3: Alternate drinks
If you drink alcohol, choose wine and not beer. Preferably dry white or red wine and try to drink two glasses of water with each glass of wine. Then have a healthier drink without alcohol such as: (sparkling) water, light or zero soft drinks. By alternating, you can participate, enjoy and continue to make conscious choices. Moreover, you avoid drinking more alcohol than you would like.
Extra tip: always ask for a glass of water/spa red next to your glass of wine.
Tip 4: Take a good look at the menu
There are more and more outdoor cafes these days that offer healthy snacks, such as a bowl of olives or raw vegetables with dip. Opt for and of these options or alternate with them. A lot healthier and it also fills you up better.
Tip 5: Very hungry?
Do not join for fun, but eat only if you are really hungry. Do you notice that you are more hungry than you thought, so you can keep eating? Then opt for a well-filling, larger meal. For example, a (meal) salad or a fresh cup of vegetable soup and eat 2 whole grain crackers with it. Ask for a salad without dressing and season it yourself with oil, vinegar, pepper and salt.
Extra tip: Restaurants serve large portions, share a main course with a table mate or order an appetizer as the main course. Have a clear soup or carpaccio as an appetizer and ask for the carpaccio dressing/oil separately.
Tip 6: Get enough exercise
Do you know in advance that you'll be hitting the patio in the afternoon? Then make sure you do some extra exercise that day. For example, go for a walk or bike ride, or walk/bike to the terrace. Every little bit helps!
Tip 7: NoRegret
Are you really managing to eat according to your personal nutrition plan? Take 1 or 2 tablets of No Regret before meals, along with a large glass of water. This limits the damage. Make sure these are always in your bag.
