You've been looking forward to it for weeks, if not months: the vacation. Finally, time for yourself, your children, or just to do absolutely nothing. And then you get sick. Sound familiar? Why is it that you seem to get sick more often when you're on vacation?
With the annoying side effect that you probably needed to recharge your battery extra often.
Flu during the holidays
You're certainly not alone. Many people get sick, especially when they're on vacation. They catch a cold, get the flu, become extremely tired, or fall victim to some other virus. It's very annoying, especially since you're finally enjoying that well-deserved rest. But there's an explanation and a solution.
Out of balance
It's all about disrupting your daily rhythm. During holidays or days off, you go to bed later, eat differently, and drink differently. People often drink more alcohol and eat less healthy. Your body gets relatively more rest while it's still in "action" mode. This is either due to an excess of stress hormones or a lack thereof. You become unbalanced. This makes you more susceptible to viruses and therefore more likely to get sick. What a shame! Especially if you've been looking forward to your vacation.
Preventing yourself from getting sick.
You can't completely prevent getting sick, but you can do things during your vacation to stay balanced and give viruses as little chance as possible. Do this by staying as close as possible to your (usual) routine. Don't go to bed too late and don't wake up much later than usual. Don't skip meals and keep exercising or moving as you always do. If you've booked a vacation, it can help to plan a few days off before departure. This gives both your body and mind time to adjust to the relative rest, reducing the chance of illness during your stay. And (keeping) active is always a good idea; it produces endorphins and helps you relax better and sleep more soundly. Do you know the importance of vitamin D? already?
